Heaths and heathers
Which is which? DeLong says heaths look like miniature pine trees that bloom in spring. Heather? “It’s the other one.” No matter which you select, the secret to success is well-drained, acidic soil, rich in organic matter. Select cultivars hardy to your zone, and plant them properly. Quoting fellow horticulturist Jill Covill, DeLong says you want “a twenty-dollar hole for a two-dollar plant.”
