Award-winning roses

Six experts pick their favourite roses

Pruning your roses
Is forsythia in bloom? If so, it's time to prune the roses (this is a fairly reliable cue across the country). Before pruning, clean and sharpen your secateurs. It's a good idea to disinfect secateurs between shrubs by dipping them in a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water. Except for miniatures, remove any dead wood and branches smaller than a pencil in diameter; try to keep the centre of the shrub open to let in light and air. Cut branches just above a leaf bud on the out-facing side. Always cut on a slight diagonal to stop rain from sitting on the cut end, which can encourage disease. How you prune is determined by rose type.

Hybrid teas If you're planning to enter blooms in a flower show, prune to an outside bud fairly low on the stem-about 15 centimetres from the ground-to encourage blooms on long stems. Otherwise, prune to an outside-facing bud about 30 centimetres from the ground.

Floribundas Prune lightly unless you're trying to rejuvenate the rose bush, in which case cut shrub back by a third or more.

Climbers I leave climbers alone until buds break along the stems. For lots of bloom, train stems to grow in an arching habit to encourage lateral breaks.

Miniatures Depending on their habit, treat these as small versions of hybrid teas, floribundas or climbers and prune accordingly.

Shrub roses If your rose blooms just once a season, cut back right after blooming to encourage new growth for next year's flowers. If it's a repeat bloomer, tidy it up, enjoy the first flush of flowers, then cut back further if required.
