Prepare for the heady scent and lavish blooms of this spring garden staple

Hulda Klager (1863-1960) began hybridizing lilacs in 1910 at her farm in Woodland, Washington, now the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens. Best among her many releases are the magenta ‘Frank’, named for her husband who died in 1922, and ‘Chrystal’, a vigorous, pure white cultivar.
