Although the gorgeous grounds of the estate fell into disrepair, it was restored in 1988 to what Beatrix would have witnessed. In fact, it was the current owners, her great-great niece, Janie Smith, and her husband, Tom, who gave the gardens their old life back with the horticultural help of their daughter, Frances, and David Lewis, a garden apprentice that had worked at Gwaenynog in the 1940s, as well as a collection of Beatrix’s own watercolour illustrations of the area.
