Working with the natural setting
The theme of gardens in intimate conversation with their natural setting was ever-present on the tour. Here, a dried-up stream bed is emphasized with stonework, creating a sense of line and texture that gives this woodland garden shape, as well as referencing the original geography of the land. This is what can happen when instead of rushing in with a bulldozer or rototiller, gardeners move in gently, tuning into the genius loci of their property to find inspiration. The same pattern of stonework appears strategically throughout the garden, set into pathways and arranged in a water feature among the more formal flower beds, and set into sand as the garden moves towards the beach.
